iPhone Duo goes on sale: few phones in stores, January waits online, careful praise

In short
  • Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, went on sale on 23 October, but Apple warned that stores have very few phones for walk-in buyers.
  • In India, the UAE, China, Japan and some other places, you need a pickup reservation; new online orders show late January delivery dates.
  • Reviewers call it the best-made foldable so far, with a softer crease, but say it is heavy, battery life is mixed and screen repairs cost a lot.

Picture someone who skipped the pre-orders and walks into an Apple Store today, hoping to take a folding iPhone home. For most people, that hope will meet a short shelf. The iPhone Duo went on sale on Friday, 23 October, and on launch day, iPhone Duo availability is the real story: Apple itself warned that walk-in stock is very limited.

Apple calls customer response “nothing short of extraordinary”, according to Reuters. For buyers, that demand means planning, patience and a careful look at the costs after checkout.

iPhone Duo availability: thin shelves and pickup-only countries

The phone is now on sale in Apple Stores, on apple.com and in the Apple Store app. The price is unchanged from our iPhone Duo pre-order story: from US$1,999 for 256 GB in the US. Another 28 countries and regions follow on 30 October.

In a 21 October statement quoted by 9to5Mac, MacRumors and Reuters, Apple said stores would have limited units for walk-in customers and expected them to sell out very quickly. Walk-ins are allowed in places such as the US, UK, Canada, Australia and parts of Europe.

Elsewhere, there are no walk-ins. Reuters names China, France, Hong Kong, India and Japan as reservation or pickup only, and 9to5Mac and MacRumors add the UAE, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand. MacRumors reported that Apple’s online store told shoppers to check back on Saturday, 24 October, for more details.

Online, the wait is long. Within about 30 minutes of pre-orders opening on 16 October, Apple’s US store was showing late January 2027 delivery dates, according to 9to5Mac, Forbes and MacRumors. Carrier dates vary, so check yours.

AppleInsider reported small queues forming a day or more early at some flagship stores.

What reviewers liked, and where the iPhone Duo still asks for patience

Full reviews arrived this week, and the tone is positive but qualified. Engadget called it a first-class foldable. Gizmodo said Apple was right to wait before making one. 9to5Mac’s roundup summed up the reviews as the best foldable yet, with compromises. The Verge was harsher, calling it expensive and sometimes frustrating, though fun, according to Macworld’s roundup.

The crease, the old weak spot of folding phones, is mostly hidden when you look straight at the screen. Several reviewers say you can still see it at an angle and feel it with a finger.

Battery life splits opinion. Engadget and Tom’s Guide reported long results in their own tests, while The Verge said the phone runs warm and may not last a heavy day. The most common complaint is weight: 254 g, more than the iPhone 18 Pro Max. Some apps are not yet built for the new screen shape, though Apple says developers can now submit updated ones.

Early stress tests are encouraging but limited. The Wall Street Journal’s Joanna Stern folded one more than 32,000 times and the hinge held, Cult of Mac reported. Another tester, reported by Android Authority, found the crease deeper after about 10,000 folds. Lab tests are not years in a pocket, and Apple still gives no fold rating.

Before you chase an iPhone Duo in stock, plan for repairs

If you have no pre-order, a walk-in is a long shot. In walk-in countries, go early and accept that stock may be gone. In pickup-only countries, such as India and the UAE, watch Apple’s online store for reservations. For an online order, think late January.

Please don’t pay resellers inflated prices; waiting brings more real-world reports.

Budget for protection too. According to Apple’s US repair price list, as reported by 9to5Mac, the iPhone Duo repair cost without cover is US$999 for the inner folding screen and US$379 for the outer screen. With AppleCare+, the inner screen costs US$99 to fix. MacObserver reports iPhone Duo AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss at US$19.99 a month or US$199.99 a year in the US. Local prices differ, so check your country’s Apple page.

A well-made first fold that rewards the patient buyer

There is a lot to respect here. Apple waited, and reviewers broadly agree the wait produced the most polished foldable so far. IDC’s Francisco Jeronimo told Reuters that Apple “has made a convincing case for this form factor”. That is an analyst’s view, not a sales figure.

The doubts are fair too. The phone is heavy, battery reports are mixed, long-term crease wear is unknown, and one screen repair costs half the phone. On balance, this looks like a careful first step. If you already want a foldable and can wait for stock, it is a strong choice. For most people, there is no rush.

Watch how fast stock and delivery dates improve after 24 October, and how the crease looks after a few months in real pockets.
