Think of someone who reads, edits photos or answers email on a phone all day, and keeps wishing the screen were bigger without carrying a bigger phone. Apple is now asking that person to spend US$1,999. iPhone Duo pre-orders open on Friday, 16 October, at 5 a.m. Pacific time (12:00 UTC), and the first foldable iPhone reaches stores on 23 October.

Samsung, Google and others have sold folding phones for years. In practice, when Apple joins a category late, it often signals that the category is ready for ordinary buyers. Whether this phone proves that will take months, not days.

iPhone Duo pre-order times and prices around the world

Pre-orders run on apple.com and in the Apple Store app in more than 70 countries and regions. In other time zones, 12:00 UTC is 13:00 in the UK, 16:00 in the UAE and 17:30 in India. Phones reach stores and doorsteps on Friday, 23 October. Another 28 countries and regions follow on 30 October; Apple’s release does not name them.

The official iPhone Duo price for 256 GB, Apple’s starting model, looks like this (checked on 16 October 2026):

  • United States: US$1,999, before sales tax
  • United Kingdom: £1,999
  • India: ₹2,99,900
  • UAE: AED 8,499

MacRumors reported in September that the 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB models cost US$2,199, US$2,599 and US$3,199 in the US.

Open, it has a 7.6-inch screen; closed, a 5.4-inch outer screen. It weighs 254 g and is 5.2 mm thin when open. Apple says the A20 Pro chip is built on a 2-nanometre process, the newest kind of chip the industry is only now making in volume. Our story on TSMC’s record quarter explains where 2nm chips stand today.

Apple claims up to 24 hours of mixed use. The main camera offers an “optical-quality 2x” zoom, which is a crop from the 48MP main sensor rather than a separate zoom lens.

A softer crease, a clever hinge, and no stress test yet

Apple says a matte “nano-texture” finish on the inner screen “minimizes crease visibility”. It does not say the crease is gone. MacRumors, after its hands-on in September, wrote that the crease “is still there, but barely”.

There are smart engineering choices too. Apple engineers told PCMag, in an interview later summarised by 9to5Mac, that a flexible graphite pipe runs through the hinge so both halves can shed heat. Tom Marieb, Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, told TechRadar in September that buyers should “hold us accountable” on durability.

What we don’t have is proof. Apple has published no fold-cycle rating. No independent drop test, teardown or full review has appeared yet. The verdicts so far come from short hands-on sessions.

Rumour: in a September note reported by 9to5Mac, analyst Jeff Pu cut his 2026 shipment estimate from 7 million to 6 million phones because the hinge is slowing production, which could mean short supply at launch. Apple has not confirmed it.

Before you tap “buy”, check your carrier, your language and Samsung’s price

The iPhone Duo is eSIM only everywhere: the SIM is digital and built into the phone, with no slot for a plastic card. If your carrier still relies on plastic SIMs, check that it supports eSIM first. Unlocking is by Touch ID, a fingerprint sensor in the side button; Face ID is not listed.

Apple’s new Siri AI arrives in beta, in English first. It is not available in China and not at first in the EU. If you live there, or use Siri in another language, buy it for the hardware, not the AI.

If you are weighing the iPhone Duo vs Samsung’s Fold 8, price is close. Samsung’s newsroom lists the Galaxy Z Fold8 at US$1,899.99 and the Fold8 Ultra at US$2,099.99, so Apple sits between them. You can follow other launches in our phones and gadgets section.

A careful first fold that asks early buyers for trust

There is a lot to like. Apple took its time, chose shared screen shapes so apps scale evenly, and spoke openly about heat and wear.

The doubts are just as fair. Battery and performance figures are Apple’s own claims. Long-term hinge and crease durability is unknown. Repair and AppleCare+ costs are not in Apple’s releases. And US$1,999 is a large sum for a first-generation design.

So, is the iPhone Duo worth it? On balance, it looks like a thoughtful first step. For people who already wanted a foldable and can afford to be early, it is a reasonable bet. For most buyers, waiting a few weeks for full reviews is the calmer choice.

The next date to watch is 23 October, when the phone reaches real hands and real pockets. The hinge has a long test ahead, and the results will matter far more than the first-day order queue.
