In March 2022, EA producer Jim Vessella opened a storage room at the company’s Redwood Shores campus. Inside were nearly 20,000 old media items: Betacam, VHS and D1 video tapes, film reels and CD-ROMs. Much of it was original footage from some of EA’s best-known games of the 1990s.
That room has now become a shop shelf. On 5 November, Electronic Arts released 25 classic PC games on Steam for the first time, and on GOG and the EA App too. For many players, the Wing Commander Steam release is the headline. The bigger story is quieter: old games disappear when nobody keeps the masters, and this time somebody did.
Seven games rebuilt from master tapes, eighteen kept as they were
Seven of the 25 are restored “Anniversary Editions”. Six come from the Wing Commander series: Wing Commander and Wing Commander II (35th), Wing Commander III, IV and Prophecy (30th), and Privateer 2: The Darkening (30th). The seventh is the Road Rash 30th Anniversary Edition, the 1996 PC version of the motorbike racer. EA says it is the game’s first digital release and comes with a relicensed soundtrack.
The other 18 are “faithful ports”: the original games, adjusted to run on today’s computers. They include Theme Hospital, Strike Commander, Crusader: No Remorse and No Regret, Ultima I to IX, Ultima Underworld I and II, and Wing Commander Privateer, Academy and Armada.
The prices are modest. Anniversary Editions cost US$9.99 and the other classics US$4.99 on Steam in the US. Launch pricing runs on Steam and GOG from 5 to 19 November; when we checked, Steam showed 50% off, at US$4.99 and US$2.49 (checked on 6 Nov 2026).

How a room of old tapes saved Wing Commander’s films
Wing Commander III and IV told their stories through full-motion video, filmed scenes with real actors. The master tapes let EA go back to that original footage. The company says they let it restore more than 1,000 video scenes across those two games. Wing Commander III alone had about 475 full-screen scenes, which took about six months to clean up.
The archive work is large. By April 2026, about 6,000 items had been digitised and about 2,500 hours of footage preserved, according to EA.
EA also did something companies rarely do: it built fans’ work into the official release. Community patches, including Matt “Mash” Wells’ Enhancement Patch, Wcdx and WCAT, are now part of the Anniversary Editions. They add 60 frames per second, better controller support, sharper video and a windowed mode.
If you already own Wing Commander, or never played it
If you bought a digital Wing Commander game on GOG or the EA App before, EA says you get the Anniversary Edition upgrade free on that platform. Check your library before you buy the Wing Commander Steam version.
If you are new to these games, the low price makes them an easy way to see where today’s space and open-world games came from. Some things are still unknown. EA has not published sales numbers, and it has not said whether the games are verified for the Steam Deck, so check the store page if you play on a handheld. It has also not said whether more vault games are coming.
November is busy for players. EA’s launch pricing ends on 19 November, the same day the GTA 6 launch arrives on consoles. And classics are selling elsewhere too: Nintendo’s own November line-up, covered in our Switch 2 sales story, includes The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Why the tapes matter more than the price tag
There is a fair business reading here. These are old games that EA already owns, brought back for far less than a new game costs to make, and only seven got the full restoration. The faithful ports will feel dated, and some players will want more than a working copy.
Still, on balance, this looks like care rather than a cash grab. EA has done this before: the Command & Conquer Remastered Collection, released in 2020, also drew on old Westwood tapes. In our reading, saving 2,500 hours of footage protects the work of the actors, artists and programmers who made these games. Crediting community modders by name is a respectful choice too. Fans kept many of these games playable for years, and this release says so openly.
The quiet lesson for everyone is simple. Digital things only last when someone looks after the originals.
By April 2026, EA had digitised about 6,000 of the nearly 20,000 items in that room. What comes out of the rest is the part worth watching.
